when I was 12 in 1972
there were no microwaves
my mom made my swanson TV dinners
i watched when nixon was a winner

then patty hearst changed her name to tanya
i was thought that she was kind of slim
but there you go again
i couldn’t make an argument

all the guys in the army smoked marijuana
it was a time before piss tests and microwaves
it was a time of gurus and nirvana

i’m not a crook or vampire
i’m not a commie or in an orgy
whatever happened to the people we once were
could it be happening again?

there were helicopters over saigon
i routed for the viet cong

i liked that italian girlfriend of the wise guy
she had long, long fake eyelashes
that was the way I was raised
on ravioli and what I later understood was sex
